As an adjuvant to conventional treatment, laser therapy can reduce germs and bacteria in gum pockets during cleanings. At Centennial Lakes Dental Group we feel the laser therapy can be a very effective and gentle way to treat the gums while creating less discomfort after treatment. It is an ideal way to remove gum over-growth and idealize gum contour. We have also found that using the laser for treatment of canker sores and cold sores can accelerate the healing process significantly and relieve much of the sensitivity associated with these lesions.
Scaling and root planning
Scaling and root planning is a treatment for gum disease. It is a manual procedure performed by a dentist or registered dental hygienist, whereby bacteria residing in plaque and tartar are removed from below the gum line. The root surface is then smoothed using special instruments and ultrasonic cleaners to promote healing and prevent plaque from easily taking hold again. Sometimes during scaling and root planning, an antibiotic is placed below the gum to further help in killing the bacteria. The antibiotic typically used at Centennial Lakes Dental Group is minocycline hydrochloride also called Arestin.
